When Bette Midler takes the stage air the town Halloween party she says ” Hello Salem, my name is Winifred. Whats yours?” which is actually a take-off of the famous line, “Hello world, my name is Rose, whats yours?” that is spoken by Mama Rose in the musical “Gypsy”. Middler played Mama Rose in the 1993 TV version Gypsy the same year Hocus Pocus was released.

The song that Sarah Sanderson sings in the air Come Little Children was written specifically for the movie.

During the fight scene in the cemetery, the background music imitates Miss Gulch’s (the Wicked Witch) theme from the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz.

In the film the kids attend school on Halloween, October 31st 1993 was actually a Sunday.

Originally the script was written for a DCOM , however it caught the eyes of a few bigger studio heads in Disney and thy felt strong enough to carry a good theatrical performance.

Rosie O’Donnell was originally offered the role of Mary Sanderson, but claims she turned down the offer to work with Bette Midler because she didn’t want to be a “scary witch”
