One of my all time favorite Disney movies Newsies, based on the New York City newsboys strike of 1899 directed by Kenny Ortega, starring Christian Bales, Bill Pullman, Robert Duvall and many more talented actors and actresses. The movie was released April 10, 1992, 25 years ago.
Before filming began most of he cast trained in dance and martial arts for 10 weeks.
While Jack Kelly is singing “Santa Fe” theres a part where he is riding a horse. The part when his arms are thrown out and he us bent back,he is actually riding on the shoulders of he stunt master.
At the time this was one of the lowest grossing live action movies in Walt Disney Studios history.
The movie became a stage musical which premiered at the Papermill Playhouse in New Jersey in 2011. The music and lyrics by Alan Menken (who composed the movies music) and Jack Feldman (the movies lyricists) and a new book by playwright and actor Harvey Fierstein. March 2012 the musical moves to Broadway and closed two years later: a North American tour launched in 2014.
The dress that Ele Keats (Sarah Jacobs) wears in “High Time, Hard Times” number is an authentic 1899 dress. The costumer had to consistently sew up small holes because the dress was so old and delicate.
The song “King of New York” was written as an afterthought by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman and became their favorite song in the movie.
April 10 1992 would have been Joseph Pulitzer’s 145th birthday.
As a prank the boys filled Kenny Ortega’s dressing room with newspapers.
At the end of the week, the newsies took it upon themselves to torment Kenny. When an opportune bucket of water missed it mark, Christian Bale and David Moscow soaked him with, as Ortega described it as “water uzis”.
Honestly if you have not seen this movie i highly recommend it, it is so amazing and magical in its own way. These boys fought for their rights they took a stand to make a change. I did have tickets to see it on Broadway but unfortunately missed my opportunity because of work…
