The pretty White House on the road from Napa to Vallejo belonged to Capt. John Greenwood. A sea captain arrived in California in 1849 and made his modest fortune in shipping. When he was 60, he enjoyed a peaceful country life with his 46-year-old wife, Lucinda.
As the sun set on February 9, 1891, Captain Greenwood was outside chopping wood for the evening fire when two well-dressed gentlemen approached him. They asked if Captain Greenwood had any employment for them. When he answered no, they asked if they could come in for a meal. Once again, the Captain declined . His wife was away, and there was no food prepared for them. Upset, one of the men drew a revolver from his coat and yelled that they wanted money.
The men marched Greenwood into his home, where they bound his hand and feet, forcing an opiate down his throat to sedate him as they ransacked his home. Unfortunately, Lucinda’s buggy approached as the robbers were ransacking her home. She had gotten to the porch when assaulted by the robbers who dragged her inside to subdue her like they did her husband. As the sun rose, Captain Greenwood was able to loosen the ties around his feet and crawled to his wife. She was dead.
People say they have seen Captain Greenwood as he mourns his wife’s death. In contrast, other visitors have seen Lucinda floating down the stairs at the mansion where she and her husband were attacked and robbed by Roe. She has also been seen wandering the building on the nearby grounds where the mansion once stood. Others swear that Roe is haunting the courthouse area.
