Running!
Being outside can be very refreshing and a great way to clear your mind. It can reduce stress, anxiety and promote the feelings of joy and well-being. Being outside can also improve your sleep, concentration, and positive emotions.
Personally, I like to go for a run. My mom and I always joke that we are focusing too much on trying to breathe that all our worries go away. We are different when it comes to running. Although, we both like to run in the morning rather than at night, I like run when no one is out. I get a better piece of mind and I feel more at ease, where as she gets more inspired to run with more people out and around her.
Running can be good not only for your mental health but for your physical health as well. If you would like to start running as part of your mental health journey, here are some tips and tricks I have for you.
- DON’T COMPARE YOURSELF TO OTHERS!!!
- This is difficult I know. But no matter the pace, distance or whatever YOU DO YOU! Don’t let anyone tell you differently. You are out there and you are doing YOU. If you are a slower runner, faster runner, you trot, jog, walk YOU ARE OUT THERE MOVING! Be proud of yourself and don’t let anyone discourage or put down your hard work.
- Start off slow
- Try and just move for at least 30 minutes. You can use the run walk method. Run to a tree, walk to the next and so on. Do what feels the best for you and your body.
- Find a buddy
- Sometimes it’s easier when you get up and move with a friend. It can help keep you accountable
- Time
- Give yourself time to adjust to this new routine. You won’t feel a difference and feel comfortable with running until about 4 to 8 weeks.
- Be Gentle!
- You know your body best, so be mindful on how you are feeling. If you are feeling stress, try another form of moving or slow your pace down. It is PERFECTLY acceptable to go slower, you are still moving!!
- Walk before Running
- Warm up your body with a nice walk before going straight into your run. It will be much easier on your body as your body will be warmed up. Maybe throw in some stretching as well.
- Set goals
- A goal is a goal no matter how small. When My mom first started her running journey she didn’t think she would even make it half a mile. We used the run walk method with her. We ran to a tree, walked to the next two. Now she can run miles and miles.
I would say use a good pair of shoe but don’t invest until you are committed. Start off slow and easy before putting in money. I hope you find your perfect outside activity like my mom and I did.

“Memories crumble like dried flower petals
At the tip of my fingers, under my feet
Right behind your back
I’m chasing butterflies, so lost in dreams
I follow your traces
Show me the way, please stop me
Let me breathe”
