La Llorona
I am 100% obsessed with the story of La Llarona. This is one story that I have heard my entire life, but in variations. So I thought it would be fun to introduce La Llorona in the Monster Introduction.
Who is La Llorona?
She is a vengeful spirit in Mexican and Latin Folk-lore, said to roam near bodies of water, wailing for her lost children who she drowned in a jealous rage.
The most common story says Maria, who after being abandoned by her husband, drowns her children in a fit of rage. Because of this, she was not able to get to heaven or hell but wonder the earth forever searching for her lost children.
La Llorona translates to “The Weeping Woman” or “The One Who Cries” which is why people say you can hear her cry for her children near large bodies of water. Legend goes if you ever hear crying or someone calling out “Ay, mis hijos!” (oh my children) or “Mis hijos…Donde están mis hijos?” (My sons!…Where are my sons?) you should immediately find shelter and avoid large bodies of water. Parents use this story to scare their children from staying out too late.
I love listening to my grandma tell this story, it is so intriguing. She also likes to put a dramatic spin on it as well because she is dramatic. Maria’s story is sad, but the question is do you believe in La Llorona? What stories have you been told about her?
