March Monsters 2026: Day 20

Mission San Francisco de Asis!

The Misión San Francisco de Asís was founded October 9, 1886. It was named for St. Francis of Assisi, the founder of the Franciscan Order, but commonly known as Mission Dolores. Mission Dolores is the oldest intact building in the City of San Francisco and the only intact Mission Chapel in the chain of San Francisco’s history including the California Gold Rush and the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. The Mission Cemetery is the only cemetery that remains within the City limits. The Cemetery is the final resting place for numerousIhloe, Miwok and other first Califonians as well as notable California pioneers.

The Cemetery and Gardens of Mission Dolores are located adjacent to the Old Mission. The gardens have been restored and planted with traditional native trees, shrubs, flowers, and plants from the 1791 period. Some of the key hauntings are from restless spirits, one in particular a little girl in the cemetery. Caretakers and security have reported seeing a girl from the 19th century wandering the grounds, often accompanied by the sound of giggling. Some visitors have stated they have felt a small hand touching theirs while some say they feel an icy touch on their back and even finding a white, powdery handprint on their shirt.

This is such a unique place to check out and if you are in town and want to check out a cemetery than this is the place you may want to stop. It really has some gorgeous sights and cool history. They don’t have any tour available but you are more than welcome to do a self tour.
